Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum to Open Voting by Mail Exhibition

National Postal Museum

Voting by mail did not start during the Covid-19 pandemic. It began in various forms during the Civil War when soldiers could not get home to vote and it picked up steam again during World War II for the same reason. Mail has been and continues to be a method for providing citizens with access to election information and materials. Today, every state has some form of voting by mail. The National Postal Museum’s exhibition “Voting by Mail: Civil War to Covid-19” explores the significant role of voting by mail in America’s democracy. Over time, legislation for both military and civilian voting using the mail has been shaped by events and politics with provisions added, removed and amended. On view Saturday, Aug. 24, through Feb. 23, 2025, “Voting by Mail” invites visitors to explore the changing logistical and political reasons for the various ways mail has been part of the election process, and how it continues to define where, when and how Americans vote in elections. Early methods for absentee voting that used the mail enabled military members to participate in elections when wartime deployments took them away from their polling precincts. The Civil War and World War II caused many states to temporarily establish or expand absentee voting for significant numbers of voters in the military. Allowances for civilians voting absentee grew in the early 20th century and in 1901 Kansas became the first state to permit voting by mail but limited this to railroad employees traveling for work. Since the 1980s, in addition to in-person voting, some jurisdictions, including eight states and the District of Columbia, have instituted all-mail voting with the automatic distribution of ballots to registered voters. The public health emergency of the Covid-19 pandemic brought about temporary procedures, new laws and debates over using the mail for voting. Objects on display focus on the early history of voting by mail in the U.S. and ways the mail is used in modern elections. A Civil War envelope for mailing soldiers’ votes on a tally sheet enabled deployed military service members to participate in the Ohio state election of 1864. World War II absentee voting materials developed for U.S. Armed Forces, including the design of a blank ballot allowed the government to distribute them before specific candidate names became available, thus accommodating weeks-long mailing time for U.S. forces overseas. Examples of modern election mail including an absentee ballot, an envelope for a mail-in ballot, an official election information guide, and notices announcing elections. “We are excited to present the role of mail in U.S. elections for government representatives serving the American public,” said Elliot Gruber, director of the museum. “The history of mail as an official conduit of election information and election voting materials has long been part of our nation’s history.” The exhibition is supported by public and exhibition programming, as well as educational resources for teachers. A special website makes available the stories, themes and historical artifacts presented in the exhibition. About the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum The National Postal Museum is devoted to presenting the colorful and engaging history of the nation's mail service and showcasing one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of stamps and philatelic material in the world. It is located at 2 Massachusetts Ave. N.E., Washington, D.C., across from Union Station. Former U.S. Comptroller General Walker Elected Federal Fiscal Sustainability Foundation Chairman

Federal Fiscal Sustainability Foundation

The Federal Fiscal Sustainability Foundation (FFSF), a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring fiscal sanity and sustainability in Washington, D.C., today announced the election of former U.S. Comptroller General David M. Walker as its Chairman. Walker and the entire Board are committed to securing a sustainable financial future for America and all Americans by advocating for a Fiscal Responsibility Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that is ratified by State Conventions of pledged delegates like the 21st Amendment. The FFSF Board is comprised of esteemed leaders, including a former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a former state Attorney General, distinguished economic scholars, political leaders, and other thought leaders. The foundation’s founder, David Biddulph, tirelessly works to preserve the American Dream for his granddaughters and future generations, free from the burden of a crippling national debt. “FFSF is empowering citizens to shape our nation's financial future. We're advocating for a Fiscal Responsibility Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” explained David Biddulph. “Traditional attempts to control government growth and debt have failed, making our mission more critical than ever. We are thrilled to have Dave Walker serve as our Chairman in these essential efforts.” Dave Walker is a seasoned public servant with a distinguished career spanning multiple presidential administrations from Reagan to the current Administration. He has received three Presidential appointments from Presidents Reagan, Bush (41), and Clinton with unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate each time. Walker has served as CEO of three federal agencies, two non-profits, and as a Partner and Global Managing Director for Arthur Andersen. His extensive board and advisory committee experience includes Social Security and Medicare, the United Nations, the Defense Business Board, and No Labels. Article V of the Constitution provides a pathway for change through a Convention of States, initiated by two-thirds of the states and ratified by three-quarters of the states. Despite the support of more than 34 states beginning in 1979, Congress has failed to act. Consequently, FFSF is pursuing legal action against Congress to compel action and is seeking a legislative fix introduced in Congress last year (H.C.R. 24) to mandate that Congress fulfill its Article V obligations. “The ticking federal debt bomb threatens our collective future. Failure to act will have serious adverse consequences for our economic security, national security, international standing, and domestic tranquility over time," Walker said. A Constitutional amendment is the only way to force current and future Congresses to restore fiscal sanity and sustainability." "The federal government just passed $35 trillion in debt, up from $5.7 trillion in 2000 and less than $1 trillion in 1979. Washington has lost control of the nation’s finances. It’s time for a Fiscal Responsibility Constitutional Amendment," Walker continued. ### For more information or to schedule an interview with Dave Walker or another FFSF spokesperson, please contact Dan Rene at 202-329-8357 or dan@danrene.com Contact Details Federal Fiscal Sustainability Foundation Dan Rene +1 202-329-8357 dan@danrene.com

Text Patents a Method for Combining Asynchronous and Real-Time Communication

Text, Inc.

Text, a global leader in B2B text communication solutions, has secured its fifth patent in the United States. The patented "system and method" enables the seamless integration of asynchronous communication channels with real-time communication within a single platform. "Customers want to communicate with companies in various ways. Sometimes, an email or another method that allows the recipient to respond later is best, which is asynchronous communication. However, sometimes rapid, direct, real-time interaction is necessary. Our technology enables seamless integration of these communication types, providing real benefits for our clients: increased user satisfaction, faster issue resolution, and better management of existing information, " explains Konrad Kruk, Head of Widget and the patent's author. The patent granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) describes a system and method that integrates asynchronous messaging with real-time communication, allowing smooth transitions between different communication modes within a single platform. The invention enables users to switch between messages (such as emails or SMS) and real-time interactions (such as voice or video calls) without leaving the communication platform or starting a new session. "This is our fifth patent, confirming our position as one of the technological innovators in the industry. We are especially proud because the secured solution introduces significant improvements in online communication, ensuring companies maintain uninterrupted and consistent communication with customers across various industries, " said Katarzyna Rogowska, head of Text's legal department. The key benefits of the newly patented solution for Text's clients and end-users include: - Improved communication efficiency: Combining asynchronous messaging with real-time communication on one platform reduces the need to switch between different communication tools, saving time and increasing productivity. - Enhanced user experience: Internet users communicating with companies via solutions like LiveChat can enjoy seamless communication, effortlessly transitioning between messaging and real-time conversations. This particularly benefits customer service, remote work, and collaborative projects. - Increased accessibility: The unified interface makes managing communications easier, ensuring that important messages and real-time interactions are never missed. This is particularly useful in environments where timely communication is critical. - Easier and more efficient record-keeping: The synchronization feature ensures that all communications are recorded, providing a reliable record of interactions. This can be crucial for legal, compliance, and reference purposes. - Scalability and flexibility: The system can be scaled to suit different organizational sizes and integrated with other systems, making it a flexible solution for various industries and applications. In summary, the invention registered by the USPTO enhances communication by combining the advantages of asynchronous messaging and real-time communication in one coherent system, offering increased efficiency, user experience, and accessibility for individuals and organizations. Operating in the “customer service” business, Text (formerly LiveChat) is one of the leaders in the global market for live chat solutions. Its LiveChat product supports companies in customer service, online sales support, and lead generation—allowing its partners to stay in touch with their customers anywhere and anytime. Text’s other products include ChatBot, HelpDesk, KnowledgeBase, and OpenWidget. LiveChat is used by over 37 thousand companies in 150 countries, the ChatBot product has over 2,800 customers in more than 30 countries, and the Helpdesk product has over 1,000 customers. Leaders in Real Estate Weigh in on National Rent Cap Proposals

K3 Holdings

K3 Holdings, a privately held real estate investment firm with extensive holdings throughout the United States issued a statement today regarding the recent proposal by the President of the United States to implement a national cap of 5% on annual rent increases. While leaders of K3 Holdings and Alpine LA Properties commend the White House's effort to address the escalating costs of housing, leaders believe that the proposed one-size-fits-all approach falls short in addressing the complexities of housing affordability across diverse regions. "Rent control policies, like the proposed national cap, are intended to stabilize housing expenses for tenants. However, the effectiveness of such policies, especially at a national level, remains a contentious issue," said Michael Kadisha, Principal of K3 Holdings. "While rent stabilization can provide much-needed stability to tenants, the recent White House proposal overlooks the crucial ties to economic metrics and the diverse circumstances of renters and property managers." Housing markets vary significantly across the United States, and what works in one region may not be suitable for another. Existing local rent control measures reflect regional nuances but would fall short if implemented on a national scale. "In addition to relieving pressure on renters, it is essential to recognize that landlords also face increasing costs in maintaining properties," added Nathan Kadisha, Principal of K3 Holdings. "While rent controls might stabilize or reduce rent increases, they do little to address the rising operational costs landlords face, such as maintenance, utilities, insurance, and other expenses." Market dynamics heavily influence rent prices, with supply and demand playing critical roles. Policies that discourage new construction or renovations due to stringent rent caps could exacerbate housing shortages, driving rents even higher in the long run. “Effective policy making demands a balanced approach —one that prioritizes stability, fairness, and inclusivity,” Nathan Kadisha continued. “By fostering collaboration between policymakers, tenants, landlords, and other stakeholders, we can work towards building stronger communities where safe, stable, and affordable housing is accessible to all.” “As property managers, K3 Holdings stands ready to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration towards these shared goals. Together, we can envision a future where housing insecurity is a thing of the past, and every individual and family can thrive in a home they can afford,” Michael Kadisha said. “By striving for comprehensive, locally adaptable solutions, we can pave the way towards a more equitable housing landscape for all Americans.” ### For more information or to schedule an interview with a K3 spokesperson, please contact Dan Rene at 202-329-8357 or dan@danrene.com Contact Details Dan Rene +1 202-329-8357 dan@danrene.com

Over 25,000 Individuals Demand FCC Hearing on Petition to Deny FOX Affiliate Broadcast License

Media and Democracy Project

Today, the Media and Democracy Project (MAD) was backed by 25,532 concerned individuals demanding that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) hold a hearing to investigate whether FOX and its leadership violated long-standing FCC rules on the character required for broadcast licensees. The 611-page filing includes signatories from all fifty states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. It marks the one-year anniversary of MAD’s Petition to Deny the broadcast license renewal application for FOX Corporation-owned television station FOX 29 Philadelphia (WTXF). “Rarely does an FCC proceeding generate such a groundswell of public engagement, and we’re thrilled to have so many supporters joining our effort,” said Milo Vassallo, the executive director of MAD. “While FOX has peppered this proceeding with politicians and sports teams, we have dedicated our efforts to educating everyday Americans about the FCC’s role in determining whether FOX's leadership meets the character expected of a broadcast licensee.” The filing represents the views of concerned citizens joining MAD in demanding a hearing and according to the filing, “petitioning their government to investigate FOX, a greedy corporation that did incalculable harm when it actively sought to undermine the 2020 presidential election for the sake of its corporate profits.” They join a growing bipartisan chorus of former FCC officials, media veterans, and a noted First Amendment scholar supporting MAD’s petition. MAD’s Petition to Deny documents serious character and rule violations relating to WTXF’s parent corporation’s egregious conduct—spreading dangerous misinformation about the 2020 election all to protect the FOX media empire’s profits. The intentional distortion of news, authorized at the highest levels of FOX’s corporate structure, and fabricated by management and on-air personalities, represents a severe breach of the FCC’s policy on licensee character qualifications. Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s actions outlined in the court decision in Dominion v. FOX “shock the conscience.” The people deserve to know the full truth about FOX’s decisions, which showed discord in the 2020 election and contributed to the attack on our nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021. In light of serious allegations of rule violations and concerns regarding character, on October 9, 2023, MAD filed a motion requesting the FCC to compel FOX to produce key nonpublic discovery from its various lawsuits to ensure full transparency and accountability for its actions. “Never in the history of the Commission has the agency been confronted with a license renewal applicant whose parent company was found by a court of law to have repeatedly presented false news,” said former FOX Broadcasting executive Preston Padden. “We are proud to be joined by so many in calling for a hearing and urge the Media Bureau to compel FOX to produce key discovery that has been withheld from the public.” It’s been nine months since the motion for discovery was filed, and outside opening the petition for Public Comment, the FCC has been silent. Today’s filing says this of the 25,532 individuals: “Petitioners have each volunteered their names in support of this effort because they believe that owning a broadcast station is more than a business—it is a public trust.” Now, it is more important than ever for the Commission to move swiftly to investigate and designate this matter for a hearing. To join this effort, visit foxpetition.com. The Media and Democracy Project: MAD is a non-partisan, all-volunteer, grassroots organization focused on strengthening a free and independent media in the public interest. MAD aims to improve our national discourse so that American voters can engage in informed decision-making. As part of that goal, MAD has an interest in the responsibility of journalists and media to report fully, accurately, and fairly on the electoral process and the outcome of elections.
